Our Story

Mudbrick Manor was constructed by the owners Ken and Bev Stephens. It was completed and opened for business at the beginning of 2002. Ken is a registered builder who has specialised in Adobe (mudbrick) construction for many years.

Some interesting facts about Adobe construction and about Mudbrick Manor in particular:

'Mud Brick' or 'Earth' is the oldest form of construction known to man.

The Great Wall Of China, the Pyramids, the Tower of Babylon, over 5000 years old and still standing. Although built of mud brick the Pyramids were veneered with stone.

  • Mudbrick Manor consumed 500 tonnes of earth formed into 9,000 bricks each weighing 23kg when dried by the sun. Earth mortar is used to bed the bricks.
  • 90 cubic metres of timber, mostly recycled was used in the 'Manor'. This includes the structural frame, ceiling lining, doors, windows and frames etc.
  • 1,200 square metres of terra cotta quarry tiles
  • 1,200 square metres of roofing iron plus 7000 roof screws
  • 200 litres of Linseed oil stain made on site
  • 150 cubic metres of concrete

All building materials are natural products from the earth.

7000 hours of Ken's labour ....... Blood sweat and tears cannot be calculated.

Ken's babies - just 8,950 to go!
